2. The city program
Sioux City's sidewalk math is the clearest example

How many slabs
Mobilization is a fixed cost. One stoop on its own hits a $300 to $700 minimum call-out; that same stoop done alongside the driveway costs far less per square foot.
How far it has dropped
A three-quarter-inch lip is a short pump. A corner that has fallen two inches is more material, more ports, and more time watching the slab come up evenly.
Access
A rig that can pull within hose reach of the slab is cheaper than one hauling material through a gate, around a deck, or down a Morningside hillside lot.
Voids under the slab
Washed-out loess leaves cavities that must be filled before anything lifts. Volume of void, not surface area, is often what actually sets the price.
Soil condition
Saturated or collapse-prone ground can push the job toward polyurethane at $8 to $25 per square foot because slurry weight would work against you.
What else has to be fixed
Joint sealing, a redirected downspout, or regrading beside the slab are small line items that decide whether the lift holds for years or a season.
4. Insurance
The insurance answer, honestly
Homeowners policies generally exclude gradual settling, earth movement, and freeze-thaw damage. Insurers treat those as maintenance, which means a slab that sank slowly over several wet seasons is almost never a claim.
The exception is narrow: damage caused by a sudden peril the policy actually covers. If you think that applies, read your own declarations page and call your agent before you call a contractor. Nobody should sell you a lift on the promise that insurance will reimburse it.
5. Timing
Why acting early is cheaper
A three-quarter-inch lip is a leveling job. It is a few ports, a short pump, and a patched surface — the low end of every range on this page.
Left alone, that lip keeps funneling water into the same void. The void grows, the slab loses support across more of its footprint, and eventually a corner cracks through or breaks off. At that point the concrete cannot be lifted as one piece and you are buying replacement at $6 to $15 per square foot instead — plus tear-out.
Frost matters here too. In northwest Iowa frost reaches roughly three and a half to four feet, and each freeze-thaw cycle works on an already-weakened joint.
